COMMON QUESTIONS & ANSWERS
Yes. Youth strength training is safe when it is properly programmed, and supervised by appropriately qualified coaches. At The Athlete Academy, all programmes are designed specifically for children and teenagers aged 10-18, with a strong focus on correct technique, gradual progression, and close supervision from our specialist youth coaches. Research consistently shows that well-coached strength training can reduce injury risk, improve confidence, and support long-term athletic development.
We coach young athletes aged 10-18 years. Training groups are organised by developmental stage, not just chronological age, ensuring each athlete trains at the right level for their physical maturity, experience, and confidence. All sessions are deliberately mixed ages, mixed abilities and mixed sports.
No. Your child does not need to be elite or even highly experienced in sport. In fact we even have some members who aren’t playing a sport at all. We work with beginners, school-level athletes, and competitive performers alike. Our youth athletic development programmes focus on building fundamental movement skills, strength, and coordination that benefit all children, regardless of sporting background.
Our athletes participate in a wide range of sports including rugby, football, hockey, netball and athletics. The physical qualities we develop such as mobility, strength, power, speed, agility, and resilience – are transferable across all sports.
The Athlete Academy is not a commercial gym where you pay to simply access equipment. Unlike a local pay to access gym, your child will never be left alone unsupervised or left to guess what they should be doing, following an inappropriate training program from social media or the internet. We specialise in delivering top tier athletic development coaching to youth athletes. Every session is structured, progressive, and evidence-based, with an emphasis on holistic long-term athlete development rather than short-term results or bodybuilding, powerlifting or weightlifting.
All sessions are delivered by our specialist youth strength and conditioning coaches, qualified to a minimum of a University Degree. They also hold additional qualifications such as UKSCA Accreditations and Fitness Industry Level 3 Personal Trainer status. The Athlete Academy is led by Rob Anderson, a UKSCA award-winning Youth Strength & Conditioning Coach with over 15 years’ experience working with schools, clubs, and national governing bodies.
Safety is central to everything we do. All our staff hold valid Police Background Checks, First Aid Certificates and Insurance. We maintain a maximum ratio of 8 athletes for every 1 coach, follow structured session plans, and have strict coaching standards and expectations. We reinforce proper movement technique before adding load or intensity, to ensure sessions are safe, effective and enjoyable.
Yes, in many cases. Many parents seek us out because their child has experienced recurring growth related injuries such as Osgood-Schlatters or Severs Disease. Our programmes focus on improving movement quality, strength, and load tolerance to help reduce future injury risk. Where appropriate, we work alongside medical professionals to support rehab programmes. In the case of minor injuries such as a sprained ankle or a broken wrist, we can continue to make great progress by modifying training to focus on what the athlete CAN do, rather than what the CAN’T do, while the injury heals.
We are conveniently located off the Edinburgh City Bypass and M8 motorway at Engage Fitness, Edinburgh Napier University, Sighthill Campus, EH11 4BN. We have great access to local transport links such as Trains (Edinburgh Park Station), Trams (Bankhead Station), as well as local buses.
Most youth athletes train 1-2 times per week, depending on age, school commitments, sport schedule, and training experience. We help parents choose the right frequency to support performance and development without overtraining.
