Athlete Academy Success Stories: Samuel MacDonald

Samuel MacDonald joined The Athlete Academy in December 2022 as a young rugby player, playing his rugby at Dunfermline Rugby Football Club. Samuel’s initial motivation for joining was wanting to improve on his speed and strength, to boost his performance on the rugby pitch.

While playing rugby at Dunfermline Rugby Football Club, Samuel was part of the Caledonian Cup squad winning the U15 age group and reaching the final at the U16 age group. It was during this period that his consistency and work ethic, helped Samuel reach the first Athlete Academy milestone, joining The 50 Club in December 2023, before becoming Centurion Number 7, after 100 sessions in June 2024.

Seeking to challenge himself more and progress his development as a player, Samuel then decided to make the move on to Boroughmuir Rugby at U18, where the squad had a very successful season, achieving a double in winning the U18 Scottish Cup and lifting the East Regional Cup.

It was during this time at the Athlete Academy that Samuel clocked up his 200th session and became the very first athlete to be inducted into our Hall of Fame.

His experience training at The Athlete Academy has inspired his future career aspirations and currently Samuel plans to attend Heriot Watt University, to study Sport and Exercise Science in September 2026. Since leaving the Academy, he has returned to volunteer to gain some valuable coaching experience and hopes to continue with this whilst at Heriott Watt University.

With the formal student placement partnership agreement in place between The Athlete Academy and Heriott Watt University for the Sport and Exercise Science undergraduate program, it will come at no surprise that we will be excited to welcome Samuel back to The Athlete Academy in a ‘full circle moment” in a new capacity as a placement student in the near future!

Samuel shared, ” The key messages at The Athlete Academy of focussing on my own growth and development without comparing and copying others has been so important in my sport and academic studies. This and maintaining the self discipline of nutrition, recovery and good quality sleep has kept me feeling physically and mentally well, ready for the next chapter. I look forward to having the opportunity to return to the Athlete Academy to give something back to the young athletes, as a coach.
