This core training myth is well-intentioned. Coaches and parents want to keep kids safe. But this “core-only” approach is based on an outdated myth. It is not just ineffective; it might actually be leaving your child more vulnerable to injury.

Where Did The Core training Myth Come From?
The idea that children should avoid full-body resistance training stems from old fears about stunting growth or damaging growth plates. Because of these fears, “core training” became the safe alternative.
It was seen as a way to build strength without the perceived risks of lifting weights. Over time, this evolved into a widespread belief that a strong core is the only strength a young athlete needs to perform well and stay healthy.

We now know that the fears surrounding youth resistance training were unfounded. When supervised by appropriately qualified coaches and performed with proper technique, full-body strength training is incredibly safe and highly beneficial for children and adolescents, not just for injury prevention but for sports performance too!

The Core Is A Bridge
To understand why core-only training falls short, we need to look at what the core actually does during sports.
The core is not the primary engine for running, jumping, or tackling. Instead, it acts as a force transfer station. It connects the power generated by the legs to the upper body, and vice versa .
Imagine a powerful car engine connected to a weak transmission. The engine might produce a lot of horsepower, but if the transmission cannot handle the load, the car will not perform well.
The same principle applies to your child. If they have a strong core but weak legs, they cannot generate the force needed to sprint faster or jump higher. Conversely, if they have strong legs but a weak core, the force gets lost in the middle, leading to inefficient movement and a higher risk of injury.

Major sports medicine organizations, including the International Olympic Committee, National Strength and Conditioning Association, Australian Strength & Conditioning Association and UK Strength & Conditioning Association all agree that appropriately coached and supervised resistance training is safe and effective for children as young as 7 or 8 years old .
But the benefits go far beyond just getting stronger.
When youth athletes engage in full-body strength training, they are not just building muscle size. In fact, before puberty, children gain strength primarily through neuromuscular adaptations. Their brains learn to communicate more efficiently with their muscles, improving coordination and motor control .
Furthermore, full-body resistance training is one of the most effective ways to build a resilient athlete. It strengthens not just muscles, but also bones, tendons, and ligaments. This comprehensive strengthening creates a shield against the demands of competitive sports.
Research has shown that integrative neuromuscular training, which includes full-body resistance exercises, can reduce the risk of sports-related injuries in youth athletes by up to 68 percent . You cannot achieve that level of protection with sit-ups or planks
alone.

How To Start Smart
Moving away from the core training myth does not mean throwing your 10-year-old under a heavy barbell. The transition to full-body strength training must be appropriate, progressive, and supervised.
Start simple.
Bodyweight exercises like squats, lunges, push-ups, and inverted rows are excellent starting points. The focus must always be on mastering perfect technique before adding any external resistance.
Appropriate Supervision is critical.
Seek out a qualified coach who specialises in coaching youth athletes to ensure your child is learning the correct movement patterns and being progresses correctly. A good coach will understand growth and mautration andknow how to progress exercises safely, ensuring the training matches the child’s developmental stage.
